edTPA Structure and Assessment Areas
What is edTPA?
edTPA is a performance-based, subject-specific assessment designed to evaluate the skills and readiness of teacher candidates. Developed by educators, for educators, the assessment measures planning, instruction, and assessment skills through a single portfolio submitted for evaluation.
The assessment is made up of three tasks: Planning, Instruction, and Assessment.
Task 1: Planning for Instruction and Assessment
- Candidates design a 3–5 lesson learning segment.
- They demonstrate understanding of all students, academic language, and content standards.
Task 2: Instruction
- Candidates submit video clips of their teaching.
- They reflect on pedagogical choices, student engagement, and learning environment.
Task 3: Assessment
- Candidates analyze student work samples and provide feedback.
- They reflect on the effectiveness of their instruction and assessment strategies.
